Cal Poly Graphic Design Students win First Place in Adobe XD Competition
On Friday September 27, 315 college students came together to compete at the IBM iX + Adobe Drop-In Creative Jam with Adobe XD. During the kick off, Billy Seabrook, Global Chief Creative Officer of IBM iX, presented the students with a design challenge around climate change. During the weekend-long Jam, 191 students designed and submitted team 52 prototypes. After an Sunday evening judging round by IBM iX, and agency designers, only 11 teams made it to the final round.
On Monday September 30, six top teams placed after an in-depth design review by Sabine Roehl, Chief Creative Officer for IBM iX North America, Gorham Palmer, IBM Distinguished Designer leading IBM’s enterprise design services practice, and Jessica Moon, Senior Design Manager at Adobe with the Adobe XD team during the evening finale session. The winning student team, Les Baguettes, included Cal Poly Art and Design students in the Graphic Design concentration (Amber Chiang, Sasha Menshikova, Cody Capella, and Sam Rogers) and one Business major with a concentration in Management of Information Systems (Tyler Rathod).
The challenge for this competition was to identify a critical area of need and then conceive, design and build an experience that enables individual or group climate action that is accessible, achievable and measurable. The students' concept—Loop—solves this problem by presenting these tasks in a way that is manageable, personalized, and rewarding. By delivering a customizable set of tasks each week and allowing users to level up, users will feel confident and motivated to do their part in reducing their ecological footprint. The inclusion of location-based tasks, such as beach clean-ups or climate rallies, in the user's area, as well as global challenges, serve to connect them with their communities and strengthen their ties with the environmental movement around them. Long term goals include helping users to develop and maintain environmentally friendly habits.
