The graphic design program is housed within the Department of Art and Design, where we offer a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree (BFA). Students in the graphic design concentration study a variety of subjects relevant to the field, including: typography, identity design, user experience design, user interface design, animation, illustration, book arts, and design history. Our curriculum emphasizes a human-centered approach; students research, analyze, prototype, and design creative concepts and solutions for business, social, and cultural contexts. Our program encourages students to think ethically and inclusively, and to engage in hands-on creative exploration and problem solving.
All graphic design students are required to create a capstone portfolio tailored to their interests and career goals. Each spring, seniors have their portfolios reviewed by design professionals to help them prepare for successful entry into the creative field. This year 26 Art and Design alumni and professional designers participated in the Senior Portfolio Review—18 in person and 7 via Zoom. Our Cal Poly graphic design network is wide-reaching and incredibly supportive; thank you, alumni!
