Enrica Lovaglio

I was raised in an Italian hamlet by the Mediterranean sea. My father was a deep-sea diver who taught me early on the value of knowing how to build, which led me to study architecture in Genova (Italy) and media arts and technology in Santa Barbara (U.S.A.).

I am a computational art professor in the Art and Design department with an honorary appointment in the Computer Science department at the California Polytechnic State university in San Luis Obispo. In the last two decades, my main interests have included immersive and interactive narratives built with advanced technological tools. More recently, my research focus has been defining new methodologies to reduce discriminatory bias through immersive narratives. For example, I lead collaborations between academia and juvenile correctional systems in designing visual narratives to later build and experience in virtual reality. The goal is to assess if empowering students inside the classroom can become an empirical, evidence-based pedagogical method to increase diversity and inclusion inside American universities.

In 2023, I earned a Ph.D. in Innovation design at the University of Camerino (UNICAM), Italy; in 2024, I earned a Ph.D. in Media Arts and Technology with an emphasis in cognitive science at the University of California, Santa Barbara, U.S.A.

I am a designer and a social and environmental activist who loves drawing, writing, reading, gardening, swimming, biking, and exploring nature.
