Faculty - Kathryn McCormick
Kathryn (Katie) McCormick is a Professor of Design in the Department of Art & Design, and has been teaching graphic design at Cal Poly since the fall of 2003. She previously taught at the University of Cincinnati in both the School of Architecture and the School of Design (2000–2003). With a Masters degree in Architecture and a Bachelors degree in Design (University of Cincinnati), she has worked on a variety of interdisciplinary projects.
At Cal Poly, McCormick teaches a broad range of core classes in the Graphic Design curriculum. In addition, she has given many guest lectures on Graphic and Product Design for other Colleges as well as participated in critiques and reviews for classes in those Colleges. She has also created or co-created several collaborative projects with a variety of students and faculty from other disciplines, and has gotten students involved with interdisciplinary projects off-campus with award winning professional Design firms and projects. Most recently, she led a group of Cal Poly Graphic Design students, as part of a consortium with three other Universities, to develop Universal Health Care symbols for a national project sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Hablamos Juntos, and SEGD (Society for Environmental Graphic Design). The symbols developed by the students won several design awards and were recently adopted and are currently being implemented in health care facilities.
In addition to being a full time tenured faculty member at Cal Poly, McCormick is Principal and Creative Director of McCormick Design, which collaborates with award-winning architecture and design firms, and independently provides professional consulting and design services for numerous clients and projects in several areas of Design including: marketing and branding (logos and identity systems); web design and on-line solutions; print, package, book and publication design; environmental graphic design (signage and wayfinding); and photography.
