Student Advising    

Annual Advisement Appointments will continue taking place through spring quarter for all BFA students. Appointments with Major Advisor, Sara Frantz, can be made via Bookings.    

Additionally, our Dept. Chair’s office hours are Wednesdays: 11am -12pm and Thursdays: 12 -1pm. To schedule an appointment email artdesign@calpoly.edu or reach out to Sara Frantz directly (sjfrantz@calpoly.edu). Drop-In appointments are also welcome.

Mochitsuki 20-minute sneak preview with Q&A

Get ready for a taste of the upcoming Mochitsuki film at Palm Theatre! Join us for a special 20-minute sneak peek that will leave you wanting more. This in-person event will give you a glimpse into the traditional Japanese mochi-making process. Witness the pounding of rice to create delicious mochi treats right before your eyes. The film weaves together tales that highlight the Japanese American journey as told through this timeless tradition. Join in as intergenerational communities revel in the ceremonial pounding of the cooked rice, the forming of the warm Mochi cakes, and of course eating the yummy results! Older adults and kids alike reflect on what Mochi means to them, leaving not a cheek untouched by rice flour.
Mark your calendars and come join us for a unique and memorable preview with a Q&A with filmmaker, Sky Bergman and film star, Paul Mori.

Department News

Student filmmakers debut: Short films screened at the Fremont Theater

A program of short films written, produced, and directed by Cal Poly students that explore stories of friendship, laughter, conflict, and discovery. All shorts were made by students in Art 483 Advanced Digital Video (James Werner) and ISLA 341 Cinematic Process (Randi Barros) in collaboration.

Professional Photography Studio Tours in Santa Barbara, CA

Photography + Video BFA majors in Senior Portfolio Project (ART 463) took part of a tour of three studios of professional photographers in Santa Barbara recently.

Professor Sky Bergman designed the studio tour to showcase Photographers at different stages of their professional career in photography.

Student Submissions Requested for The Roundup Daily E-Newsletter

The Roundup is Mustang News’ daily e-newsletter used to promote the latest Mustang News and KCPR headlines. Starting last quarter, we introduced a student spotlight section in our Friday newsletters, allowing students to showcase any creative works, including digital art, comics, photographs, poems, etc. to the student body.

2024 Design Competition Now Open

We are thrilled to announce the opening of our prestigious 2024 Design competition here at Communication Arts!

The winning entries, featured in our beautiful Design Annual, garner recognition from our expansive international audience of over 30,000 individuals, many of whom are leading creatives actively seeking fresh professional connections. The CSU Media Arts Festival is now accepting submissions for the 2024 competition. We look forward to seeing the amazing work your students have created this past year.

Art After Dark

Explore Art After Dark in SLO County

Art After Dark is a self-guided art walk on the First Friday of each month that allows the community to experience visual, literary, and performing art in SLO County in galleries, non-profit organizations, and other businesses. This event is free and open to all. We encourage people to explore the creativity originating on the Central Coast.

The next Art After Dark is Friday, May 3rd from 5pm to 8pm. See who’s participating.

Announcements are sent to members of the Art and Design Department each week while classes are in session. To submit an event or news item, please email information to Paula Rygg (pyrgg@calpoly.edu), by Friday at 4:00 pm prior. Include title, date and time, participation information (Zoom link, registration, ticketing, fee, etc.), and a brief description. Small – email sized images may be included. Weekly announcements are approved by the chair before they are distributed.
