Art and Design Department Hiring Photography/Video Technician

The Art and Design Department is hiring a Photography/Video Technician. Under the general direction of the Department Chair and in consultation with the Photography/Video faculty lead, the Photography/Video Technician is responsible for the independent execution of a variety of complex work tasks, including providing a full range of support services for both the lower- and upper-division Photography/Video Option classes. The Photography/Video Technician position is paid under the 11/12 pay plan, where salary for 11 months is distributed over 12 months with July off (with pay, benefits, and vacation/sick leave accrual continuing through the month off.)

The Art and Design Department at California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo, is one of 16 academic departments in the College of Liberal Arts and is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). Its primary purpose is to prepare students in the major for careers in art and design and related fields. The department offers a BFA in three concentrations: graphic design, photography and video, and studio art, and supports three minors (art history, photography and video, studio art), including a joint minor with the Computer Science Department in Computing for Interactive Arts. The Art and Design program consists of approximately 240 majors, 100 minors, and also offers courses that fulfill GE requirements to the general university population. There are 11 full-time tenure-line faculty, 11-14 part-time lecturers per term, and 7 full-time staff positions. All of these personnel use the Art and Design studios and educational workspaces as active components of their teaching programs. The hands-on instructional opportunities supported by these facilities are essential to the college's academic mission.

Under the general direction of the Department Chair and in consultation with the Photography/Video faculty lead, the Photography/Video Technician is responsible for the independent execution of a variety of complex work tasks, including providing a full range of support services for both the lower- and upper-division Photography/Video Option classes. The Photography/Video Technician provides instructional support to students ranging from properly using photographic and video equipment; to checking out, managing, and maintaining a wide variety of photo and video equipment; to providing instruction on computer programs and peripherals. This position will also coordinate activity and access, and provide specialized technical and instructional support for classes and individual student projects, and will make recommendations to the faculty regarding equipment and supply purchase and replacement.

This position oversees approximately 1500 combined square feet of classroom, shooting studio, digital printing lab, computers and darkrooms in the Photography/Video Lab. The Photography/Video Lab consists of photography/video studios, video editing suites, a digital printing and computer lab, and an advanced facility with wet darkrooms. The Photography/Video Technician regularly recruits, hires and manages student assistants. The Photography/Video Technician also accommodates the entire Department with photo/video services pertaining to both academics and extracurricular, department-related activities.
