Student Advising

Advising Appointments will continue taking place through winter quarter for all BFA students. Appointments with Major Advisor, Sara Frantz, can be made via Bookings.

Additionally, our Dept. Chair’s office hours are Mondays: 11am -12pm and Thursdays: 12 -1pm. Make an office hours appointment with Sara via Bookings. Drop-In appointments are also welcome. Email artdesign@calpoly.edu if you have any questions.

Cal Poly SHORT CUTS at the SLO Film Festival

April 28th - Doors open at 6:30pm - Screening Begins at 7pm
Fremont Theater

SHORT CUTS features 6 short films created by Cal Poly students under the mentorship of Randi Barros, screenwriter, editor, and ISLA Lecturer, and James Werner, artist and Associate Professor of Art & Design. Engage with emotionally charged stories exploring love, loss, discovery, and unexpected moments of connection. See tomorrow’s filmmakers at work today.
 

INTERCEPTION

An aspiring 20-year-old fashion designer stuck in a dead-end job spars with her difficult manager, but after intervening in an accident involving the manager’s son, their relationship shifts in an unexpected way.

GOAT CREEK

An eclectic older woman returns home to scatter the ashes of her younger sibling, hoping to reconnect with her only living sister, who wants nothing to do with her.

STUCK

A young woman, haunted by her parents' broken marriage finds herself reliving her past through her relationships, leaving her stuck in a cycle of destruction and heartbreak.

OPERATION LOST PUP

An overwhelmed mother makes the difficult decision to sell the family dog, but fails to inform her young imaginative daughter of the exchange which ignites a madcap adventure.

LIFE ON THE LINE

A man speaks on the phone with a customer service representative in an attempt to cancel his subscription to life.

STICKY

A hopeless romantic starts a relationship through the exchange of sticky notes on a public bus.

Scholarship Applications Open Until April 30th

Please take the time this week to complete your annual scholarship application (duration: 1 hr), which you can find on your portal.

By completing the general scholarship, you will automatically enter* into the pool to receive ART Department related scholarships (for majors and minors).

*Note: Portfolios will be requested for some Photo+Video scholarships.

Please reach out to the office if you need any support with your scholarships.

Request for Proposals: 2025 Box Art Program – 15th Anniversary Edition - LIVE NOW!!

The City of San Luis Obispo is pleased to invite local artists to apply for the 2025 Box Art Program, a celebrated initiative that transforms utility boxes into vibrant public artworks. This year marks the 15th anniversary of the program and by the end of the season our community will have 75 works of art to enjoy!

2025 Box Art Program Details

  • 20 utility boxes will receive new artwork (18 due for deaccession and rotation, 2 currently empty).
  • ONE single Request for Proposals (RFP) will cover all 20 designs. The City will not be hosting a second round of proposal requests this year.
  • Application Period: NOW – May 16, 2025.
  • Eligibility: Open to individual artists, artist teams, and community groups with a designated lead artist. There is no age limit.
  • Technical Requirements: Any artwork that can be photographed or digitized is eligible for installation as a high-quality vinyl wrap, allowing for diverse creative expression.

New for 2025: Explore SLO’s Districts

As part of this anniversary year, we encourage artists to explore and draw inspiration from San Luis Obispo’s unique districts and neighborhoods. Artwork will be categorized by district:

  • Chinatown Historic
  • Downtown Historic
  • Mill Street Historic
  • Old Town Historic
  • Railroad Historic
  • Outlying Areas

For further details on each district, including application guidelines, jury expectations, and utility box locations and specifics, please refer to the 2025 Box Art RFP.

New for 2025: Artist Resources & Support

  • Online tutorials will be available to guide applicants through the process. Look for the tutorials on the Box Art Program website in April 2025.
  • Box Art Application Support Workshop: An in-person opportunity to receive support photographing your artwork(s), merging your digital artwork with the application template and completing the application. This FREE event will be April 30, 2025, at the Library Community Room. Register to attend beginning April 1, 2025, on the Box Art Program website.

New for 2025: 15th Anniversary Celebrations

The City will be hosting a series of events throughout the year, including:

  • Box Art Scavenger Hunt (Launching June 2025).
  • Monthly Box Art Tours (June – September 2025).
  • Meet the Box Artists Event (October 4, 2025, details TBA).
  • Limited-edition 15th Anniversary Box Art Swag.

We invite you to be part of this exciting opportunity to enhance public spaces, reflect the diverse identities of our community, and celebrate the City’s artistic heritage.

ASI Makers Market - Vendor Applications Open

The Makers Market is where creativity meets craftsmanship! Explore an electric array of handcrafted one-of-a-kind creations, from jewelry, ceramics, clothing, and much more!

The mission of the ASI Makers Market is to promote the Craft Center and to provide a location for talented artists to sell their work. All unique goods are made by local vendors in a variety of mediums.

The next Makers Market will be May 5–7, 2025, from 10 a.m.–2 p.m. in Chumash Auditorium (building 65). Vendor applications will open on Monday, Apr. 7 at 8 a.m. and will close on Wednesday, Apr. 23 at 11:59 p.m.

Announcements are sent to members of the Art and Design Department each week while classes are in session. To submit an event or news item, please email information to Paula Rygg (prygg@calpoly.edu), by Friday at 8:00 am. Include title, date and time, participation information (Zoom link, registration, ticketing, fee, etc.), and a brief description. Small – email sized images may be included. Weekly announcements are approved by the chair before they are distributed.
