Local Print Show

Opening Reception Thursday, January 29th from 5 - 7pm

Local Print is a pop-up workshop and evolving installation that offers a space to learn more about Risography and its role in advancing physical print in a digital age.

The Riso printer was first launched in Japan in 1980 and designed for inexpensive but high volume printing using environmentally-friendly soy-based inks. Since then it has become a catalyst for a thriving community of artists, graphic designers, printmakers, zinesters, and independent publishers who value its hands-on operation and its “perfectly imperfect” aesthetic of vibrant, saturated colors that is unlike any other printing process. The Riso printer also plays a significant role within the field of socially engaged printing and publishing, allowing individuals to bypass the gatekeepers of traditional publishing houses.

Local Print is a participatory space for learning about Riso printing and independent publishing. It will also be the temporary home for the RiSLO Studio, the Riso printing lab within Cal Poly’s Art & Design department. Visitors to the show can:

•    Take part in hands-on demonstrations of Riso printing as well as zinemaking workshops

•    Print their work during Friday Open Studio hours

•    Take home posters from an ongoing installation with reflections from the growing community of Riso printers and studios

•    Learn more about Riso printing via ongoing screenings and the growing RiSLO zine library

Annual Spring Quarter Art Event: GEMS Looking for Art Submissions

At GEMS (Gender Experiences, Monologues, and Stories), we hope to broadcast the voices of people with similar lived experiences and shared stories to create a sense of community and connection for our students. We are accepting both art submissions for our art gallery as well as submissions for performances (monologues, dance, or theatrical pieces). The theme for this year is Resisting Erasure. We are looking for pieces that explore themes of gender equity, resistance, visibility, and survival within social and political environments that marginalize gender-diverse communities. Submissions are open to any form of medium and are encouraged to reflect personal experience, collective memory, and/or imagined futures.

Artist Talk: Sculpture Jam

Saturday, Jan 30: Members of the public are invited to the unveiling of SLO's newest public art installation: Sculpture Jam by the late California artist Bruce Johnson. A ribbon cutting at SLOMA's Mission Plaza sculpture lawn will begin at 12 PM.

At 5:30 PM, join a talk led by Johnson's daughters and learn more about the artist's life and work. Admission to the talk is free but registration is required.

About the Artist: Sculptor Bruce Johnson grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and studied art at the University of California, Davis in the 60's. Despite his location in rural Sonoma County, Johnson found international recognition with large- scale sculpture in Italy, Spain and Taiwan and many private and public collections in the U.S.A.

Johnson often worked with massive pieces of salvaged redwood, embellished with copper details. Every copper or wood surface has a unique and deliberate texture.

This artist talk and public art installation is supported by the City of San Luis Obispo’s Public Art Program.
