Lana Z Caplan's Solo Exhibition Oceano - for seven generations
January 25th - March 1st
Opening Reception on January 25th from 2-5pm
Located at the Harvey Milk Photo Center in San Francisco
Lana Z Caplan’s project Oceano (for seven generations) tells the story of the Oceano Dunes through the dunes’ successive inhabitants, while interrogating photographic history and convention.
Co-constructed, performative portraits contrast the historic inhabitants – the Indigenous yak tityu tityu yak tiłhini (ytt) Northern Chumash Tribe, Cecil B. DeMille’s 1923 ancient Egyptian film set, the Modernists, and a colony of depression-era artist and mystic squatters – with the current ATV riding community that is the source of a public health crisis for neighboring communities. Black and white landscape images that resemble Weston’s are flipped into negatives, confusing the notion of photographic truth and challenging the male-dominated history of the genre.

California Sculptors Symposium (CSS) in Cambria
April 6th - 13th
California Sculptors Symposium (CSS) is a 501c3 established in 2003 to promote education in sculpture. This annual, week-long, symposium is held at Camp Ocean Pines in beautiful Cambria, California. The camp is situated on a bluff overlooking the ocean, away from the distractions of daily life. This educational event is non-discriminatory and non-judgmental bringing together about 50-60 attendees and 6-8 professional instructors each year. Throughout the week, lectures and demonstrations on design, technical topics, and professional trade information are aimed at increasing the sculptors’ creativity and expertise. We invite students, artists of all levels, and the general public to gain a better understanding of how sculptures are created. It is a stimulating environment where participants come together to learn and share their enjoyment of working with stone and other media.
