Show runs from January 31st - February 28th
The Cal Poly University Art Gallery is proud to present the work of James Edmondson in his show, "In the Garage, I Feel Safe. No One Cares About My Ways,” from Friday, January 31 through February 28, 2025. The show opens on January 31, starting with a talk by Edmondson in Baker Science Rm. 180-101 from 5:00 – 6:00 PM, followed by a reception in the gallery from 6:00 – 7:30 PM. Edmondson will also be teaching a poster design workshop for Art and Design students on Friday, January 31 from 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM in Dexter 34-149.
James Edmondson is a type designer based in Oakland, California. In 2015, he started OH no Type Co., an independent font foundry that creates bespoke and retail typefaces. With a background in lettering, and a deep appreciation for lively typefaces that are uniquely beautiful, and fun to read, Edmondson’s goal has always been to create quality work that highlights underappreciated genres. He respects history without reinventing the wheel—organic over geometric, lively over perfect, and good spacing above all else.

We Were Here - The Untold History of Black Africans in Renaissance Europe, exhibited in the Central Pavilion directed by Adriano Pedrosa at the 60ᵗʰ International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale, sheds light on the overlooked presence of African and Black individuals in Renaissance Europe, highlighting their depiction in masterpieces by some of the era’s most celebrated artists. How did they come to Europe? Why were they portrayed? Were they truly all servants or slaves? If the Black faces portrayed in these Renaissance masterpieces could speak, what would they tell us?

The Pack Drumline
January 26th from 2 - 4pm
From humble beginnings as an afterschool program in Chicago, teaching percussion and dance to at-risk youth, this dynamic performance group brings their electric rhythms and high-energy beats to the stage in a show that is anything but basic. The official drumline of the Chicago Bulls (NBA) and Chicago Sky (WNBA), their semi-finals finish in Season 17 of America’s Got Talent skyrocketed them to a Las Vegas Residency at the Luxor, a guest drumline appearance with the Los Angeles Lakers, and a performance at the NFL Super Bowl LVIII.
From the opening beats to the final crescendo, this showcase of expert drumming, intricate choreography, and stunning visuals will have you on the edge of your seat!
