ART 370 Michelangelo
Section 01: Monday/Wednesday 10:10am - 12pm
Section 02: Monday/Wednesday 12:10pm - 2:00pm
This course analyzes the art and life of Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564), the renowned painter, sculptor, architect, and poet. We will investigate a select body of works from the perspective of their making and reception, seeking to understand the overall experience of his art—the relative success or failure of his projects—by studying the varied agendas of those who commissioned them and the varying expectations of those who encountered them. Questions concerning the artist’s life, motivations, personal relationships, and reputation will be addressed by reading primary sources. Attention will also be given to the role of drawings and his poetry in relation to the artist’s finished and unfinished works.
For any questions about the course, please email Professor Giancarlo Fiorenza

TH470 Ancestral Theatre
This Spring, Theatre and Dance is happy to host the Susan J. Currier Visiting Professor, Andrew Saito. Mr. Saito will be offering a Select Advanced Topics section: TH470 Ancestral Theatre.
About the Class
Students will research and engage with their ancestries, genealogies, families and communities to research their familial and cultural pasts and relate them with our present and future through creating plays.
For example, a student could relate their ancestors’ involvement in the Great Migration with the current and escalating climate displacement. What tools, experiences, wisdom, and strength in one's ancestral web could prove beneficial in today’s changing world?
Please note that we have changed the meeting pattern for
TH470 Ancestral Theatre to Tuesday / Thursday 9:10a - 11a.
NO PREREQUISITES NECESSARY. NO ADD CODE NECESSARY.
About Andrew Saito
Andrew Saito is an internationalist playwright who focuses on indigenous and cross-racial stories, hybridity, and struggles against colonialism and its long-lingering footprints. He holds an MFA from the Iowa Playwrights Workshop, and a BA in Ethnic Studies from UC Berkeley. Seminal mentors in his formation include: June Jordan, Cherríe Moraga, Tiya Miles, Octavio Solís, Migdalia Cruz, Naomi Wallace, and Sherry Kramer.
Rome Art Program Summer 2024
Launched in 2009, Rome Art Program (RAP) inspires students to develop their artistic vision through painting and drawing on the streets of Rome, expanding on the plein-air tradition of earlier generations of artists. Rome Art Program welcomes students pursuing their B.F.A. and M.F.A. degrees in Fine Art, as well as students of Art History, Architecture, Photography, Design, and Filmmaking, who seek to expand their understanding of Fine Art by acquiring an understanding of studio practice. It is an intense program where participants experience another culture, find their own personal vision, and create artwork with passion.
