Upcoming Events

Ian Pines and Juan Manuel Pérez Salazar Exhibition Reception on December 7th

Epistemic Forms, Extracting Perimeters unites Ian Pines and Juan Manuel Perez Salazar in a dialogue on the nature of painting. Perez Salazar's geometric forms contrast with Pines' instinctual mark-making, balancing structure and spontaneity. Their abstract works emerge from intuitive exploration, bypassing direct references. Together, they challenge the boundaries of abstraction, offering viewers new ways of seeing. This exhibition invites deeper engagement with the creative process.

Exhibition Reception will be held from 2:30-5:30PM on Saturday, December 7th at Shepard Hall Gallery in the Santa Maria Public Library

Exhibition open through January 6th, 2025

Strange Birds | Heidi Neilson

University Art Gallery
Show runs from November 7 - December 6

Cal Poly is pleased to present Strange Birds, a multi-faceted show by Interdisciplinary artist Heidi Neilson. The show is open from Nov. 7 to Dec. 6 in the University Art Gallery in Dexter.

Satellites, nicknamed “birds” in aerospace and ham radio circles, are critical to our lives but are essentially invisible. Heidi Neilson’s exhibition Strange Birds uses video, electronics, prints, photographs and book works to investigate our relationship with satellites. The different works expose the relationship from different angles—our history and future visions—as well as how these orbiting devices extend our sensory capacities and allow us to participate in environments which we would be unable to perceive well, or even survive at all, ourselves.

Philip Guston

ART 402: Advanced Figure 2D

MW 8-11am with Ian Pines

The Figure-Groan Relationship

In this class we will investigate by producing art how the figure can be abstracted (and/or emerge) to varying degrees in painting, drawing, and digital renderings from mild distortions of bodily features and caricatures to the mercurial edge of figure-ground relationships. Is there actually such a thing as pure abstraction, and, if so, is it irrelevant, decadent, bourgeois? Does that matter?

Some of the artists we will look at include Cecily Brown, Francis Bacon, Jacob Lawerence, Leon Golub, Jay DeFeo, Honoré Daumier, Carroll Dunham, Paul Cézanne, Hilma af Klint, Max Beckmann, Rema Ghuloum, Philip Guston, and other Abstract Expressionists who evolved their practice.
