Strange Birds | Heidi Neilson

University Art Gallery
Show runs from November 7 - December 6

Cal Poly is pleased to present Strange Birds, a multi-faceted show by Interdisciplinary artist Heidi Neilson. The show is open from Nov. 7 to Dec. 6 in the University Art Gallery in Dexter.

Satellites, nicknamed “birds” in aerospace and ham radio circles, are critical to our lives but are essentially invisible. Heidi Neilson’s exhibition Strange Birds uses video, electronics, prints, photographs and book works to investigate our relationship with satellites. The different works expose the relationship from different angles—our history and future visions—as well as how these orbiting devices extend our sensory capacities and allow us to participate in environments which we would be unable to perceive well, or even survive at all, ourselves.

Linh Dao featured in Cal Poly Humboldt's Gallery: liminal bodies and space

liminal bodies and space showcases two artist's distinct but echoed personal experiences as newcomers to the U.S., illuminating the resulting transformation of their identities, in the physical, and virtual worlds. Featuring the creative work of new media artists Linh Dao and Amanda Stojanov, this exhibition emerges as a response to an elusive sense of belonging in America as others or foreigners. Their works explore the ongoing tension and fluidity within both personal and societal concepts of identity. They share their experience of femme and otherwise marked bodies as they adjust to the process of assimilation and the erosion of their languages, history, and cultures. New technologies are used in conjunction with expressive typography to interrogate marginalized realities, including augmented reality, virtual reality, projections, performance, and interactive experiences.

In this exhibition, two pieces feature the works of dear friends and collaborators of the principal artists and designers. Living Disruption is a collaboration with Suzan Globus. Amorphous includes significant contributions from Elise Coatney ('24) and Chenin Rowe (4th year).

Ian Pines Show Opened Yesterday at the Shepard Hall Gallery

Epistemic Forms, Extracting Perimeters unites Ian Pines and Juan Manuel Perez Salazar in a dialogue on the nature of painting. Perez Salazar's geometric forms contrast with Pines' instinctual mark-making, balancing structure and spontaneity. Their abstract works emerge from intuitive exploration, bypassing direct references. Together, they challenge the boundaries of abstraction, offering viewers new ways of seeing. This exhibition invites deeper engagement with the creative process.

The Lion in Winter

The Cal Poly Theatre and Dance Department proudly presents:

The Lion in Winter, by James Goldman.
Directed by Ramón Esquivel; featuring faculty designs and student performances.

Tickets and information HERE.

Sibling rivalry, adultery, and dungeons – The Lion in Winter, by James Goldman, is a modern-day classic. Comedic in tone, dramatic in action – the play tells the story of the Plantagenet family, who are locked in a free-for-all of competing ambitions to inherit a kingdom. The queen, and wealthiest woman in the world, Eleanor of Aquitaine, has been kept in prison since raising an army against her husband, King Henry II. Let out only for holidays, the play centers around the inner conflicts of the royal family as they fight over both a kingdom and King Henry’s paramour during the Christmas of 1183. As Eleanor says, “Every family has its ups and downs,” and this royal family is no exception.
