Student Advising

Advising Appointments will continue taking place through fall quarter for all BFA students. Appointments with Major Advisor, Sara Frantz, can be made via Bookings.

Additionally, our Dept. Chair’s office hours are Mondays: 11am -12pm and Thursdays: 12 -1pm. Make an office hours appointment with Sara via Bookings. Drop-In appointments are also welcome. Email artdesign@calpoly.edu if you have any questions.

Studio Art Board Positions Open

Studio Art Club is very excited to kick off the year and is looking to fill two board positions for the current academic school year. These positions are:

  • Treasurer: Responsibilities include handling the club's finances. 
  • Graphic Design Chair: Responsibilities include designing graphics for our meeting announcements once every two weeks, and poster(s) for our publicity.

Art & Design students at Off Register Santa Barbara, Oct 18th

Cal Poly RI-SLO Studio and Zine Library will be tabling for the first time at Off Register: Santa Barbara Art Book and Print Fair on Saturday, October 18th! Students will be selling original zines and prints at this annual festival celebrating the art of all things print. Join us to support independent publishing and your favorite student artists and designers! Off Register takes place at Community Arts Workshop at 631 Garden Street in Santa Barbara and is entirely FREE to attend.

Sticker Competition!

Cal Poly Art & Design students are invited to submit their original sticker designs as part of our sticker campaign! Selected works will be featured on stickers distributed throughout the department and beyond.  Winning designs must reference the overall awesomeness of the department or an individual concentration. You have one month (October 24th) to be fully considered for the first printing.

Job Opportunities

Photo Lab Assistant

The Art and Design Department's Photo/Video department supports the teaching, research and study needs of photography and video faculty and students. The photo studio is located on the Cal Poly campus in building 34, room 222.

Under the general supervision of the Photo Tech, student assistant aids the photo tech in checkout and check in of photo/video equipment, darkroom supplies and in the digital darkroom. Includes scanning images from negatives, printing, troubleshooting equipment and preparing equipment for classroom demos. Performs other imaging and reference services as needed. Is responsible for the security and orderliness of the photo studio, particularly its equipment.

Class experience in photo lab preferred. Most likely to be filled by Junior or Senior that has taken ART 325 - Advanced Lighting.

$16.50-17.00  depending on experience, offering 6-12 hours per week. Priority is given to Work-Study students.

Cal Poly Opportunities

Indigenous Peoples Day – October 13 | 5–7 PM | yakʔitʸutʸu Lawn

Join us on October 13th at 5 PM on the yakʔitʸutʸu Lawn for Indigenous Peoples Day, hosted by the Native American & Indigenous Cultural Center.

Enjoy free food and an evening of song, culture, and community with the yak titʸu titʸu yak tiłhini (ytt) Northern Chumash Tribe, who will be sharing traditional songs and games that have been passed down through generations for thousands of years.

This event is a chance to experience and honor the living traditions of the original stewards of this land — through connection, learning, and celebration.

Open Studios Art Tour

October 11 - 12 and October 18 - 19

The San Luis Obispo County Open Studios Art Tour, a program of SLO County Arts Council, takes place each year over two weekends in October, National Arts and Humanities Month. Free to the public, fine artists and crafters open their studios to showcase their art and share their processes. Visitors create their own self-guided tours using the catalog of participating artists.

Visiting studios during the tour gives you the chance to interact with artists on an intimate level and go deeper into their process, all while traveling around the landscapes and communities that inspire their work!

The 2025 tour takes place from 10am to 5pm over the weekends of October 11-12 and October 18-19.

Announcements are sent to members of the Art and Design Department each week while classes are in session. To submit an event or news item, please email information to Paula Rygg (prygg@calpoly.edu), by Friday at 8:00 am. Include title, date and time, participation information (Zoom link, registration, ticketing, fee, etc.), and a brief description. Small – email sized images may be included. Weekly announcements are approved by the chair before they are distributed.
