Student Advising

Advising Appointments will continue taking place through fall quarter for all BFA students. Appointments with Major Advisor, Sara Frantz, can be made via Bookings.

Additionally, our Dept. Chair’s office hours are Mondays: 11am -12pm and Thursdays: 12 -1pm. Make an office hours appointment with Sara via Bookings. Drop-In appointments are also welcome. Email artdesign@calpoly.edu if you have any questions.

Art & Design students at Off Register Santa Barbara, Oct 18th

Cal Poly RI-SLO Studio and Zine Library will be tabling for the first time at Off Register: Santa Barbara Art Book and Print Fair on Saturday, October 18th! Students will be selling original zines and prints at this annual festival celebrating the art of all things print. Join us to support independent publishing and your favorite student artists and designers! Off Register takes place at Community Arts Workshop at 631 Garden Street in Santa Barbara and is entirely FREE to attend.

Sticker Competition | Deadline 10/24

Cal Poly Art & Design students are invited to submit their original sticker designs as part of our sticker campaign! Selected works will be featured on stickers distributed throughout the department and beyond.  Winning designs must reference the overall awesomeness of the department or an individual concentration. You have one month (October 24th) to be fully considered for the first printing.

Social Media and Video Production Internship

The Surface Walkers

The Surface Walkers is a multimedia music project that includes a sci-fi saga story, a concept album, concept art and visual storytelling, a 6-piece band, and a rock musical, with a film adaptation of the musical in development. We play music events regionally, and are actively releasing new music monthly.
 
We are seeking a video production and social media intern for our business. This person will be deeply involved in the creative process with content development, from storyboarding all the way to video production and editing. We are looking for someone who is very comfortable behind the camera, effectively executing on our visual storytelling by helping to direct, set up shots, and assist with filming our shoots. They will also support social media marketing, including copywriting, storytelling and posting, along with writing and pushing out press releases. There may also be occasional event support
opportunities!
 
The ideal candidate should possess a solid mix of marketing and creative skills to work with our team. You’ll have the opportunity to work on branding and event sales campaigns and get hands-on experience in content creation for a highly developed media concept.
 
The work will be 10-20 hours a month depending on our progress, and will be a hybrid of in person and remote work (storyboarding and shooting vs editing and writing). In person work will mostly take place on Thursdays and weekends, coordinating a maximum of 2-3 days per month.

Location: Morro Bay

Approximate Hours Per Week: varies based on marketing campaigns. Approximately 10-20 hours per month.

Volunteer Film Crew – Wild Horse Gentling Clinic (Nov 7–9)

Healing Heroes Through Horsemanship, a 501(c)(3) equine-assisted Veteran and rescue organization, is seeking Cal Poly film students to help capture footage at a three-day wild-horse gentling clinic (Nov 7–9, 2025, Arroyo Grande). The footage will contribute to a national humane-training campaign led by the ASPCA’s Right Horse Initiative and will serve as ongoing educational material for trainers, rescues, and the public. This unpaid volunteer opportunity (with $100 stipend included per day) offers hands-on documentary experience with potential for continued collaboration on post-event storytelling and outreach content.

We’re looking for 1 to 2 students to assist, and added in a stipend of $100 per day ($300 each total). The demo runs from 10 am to 4 pm each day - Nov 7, 8, 9.

3D Design Freelance Position

Project:  Universal Solar Panel Support System - 30 video

Description: Digitally animate the deployment process of the Universal Solar Panel Support System in a 30-second video. Images of the system and its components, along with a storyboard, will be provided. The video will need to include:

Component breakout and visual assembly of the main mounting brackets

Deployment process of lifting and opening

Examples of mounting surfaces

Fall Career Fair | October 22 and 23

Fall Career Fair is taking place over two days, Wednesday October 22nd and Thursday October 23rd , 10:00am to 3:00pm in the Recreation Center (Bld. 43). Also taking place on Wednesday evening from 5:30pm to 7:00pm is the Student + Employer Networking Event: Broadening Access, Expanding Career Possibilities. Taking place in the south gym of the Rec Center, this non-recruiting event is geared towards students who are interested in discovering how companies foster a supportive workplace for employees from various backgrounds and allows them to hear career insights and guidance from professionals who hold similar values and interests. Registration is required for this event.

Additionally, for the first time, Career Services is hosting a Sales Career Fairon Tuesday, October 21st from 4:00pm to 7:00pm in the Rec Center. Nearly 40 organizations will be attending, each hiring for employment and/or searching for interns. Some organizations attending include Consolidated Electrical Distributors, Gallo, Insight Global, Jackson Family Wines, Workday, and Samsara.

And finally, in the days leading up to these events, Career Services is also hosting resume and cover letter workshops, CLA specific group career counseling sessions, and career fair preparation workshops—all of which can be found on Cal Poly Now.


Semester Conversion Countdown Carnival

Join the Semester Conversion Team, College Advising Centers, and partners on October 30 from 11 a.m.–3 p.m. on Dexter Lawn for a carnival-style event aimed to help students prepare for Cal Poly’s upcoming semester conversion. Explore interactive booths, play games, and get quick, helpful information about what’s changing and how to navigate the transition.

Collision Literary Magazine Open for Submissions

Collision Literary Magazine at the University of Pittsburgh is currently open for submissions of undergraduate fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and art, and we welcome Cal Poly Art and Design students to submit! By submitting to the annual magazine, students will be considered for our writing and cover art contests.

Blank Canvas Arts Grant

A new funding opportunity for SLO County artists

The Blank Canvas Arts Grant supports experimental, contemporary projects by emerging and mid-career artists based in San Luis Obispo County. Funded projects should represent a playful exploration of artistic expression that strays from traditional art-making conventions and gallery installation. Proposals should be conceptually oriented to provoke audience response and questions by providing thoughts, images, sounds, and physical arrangements in unexpected places. Applicants are encouraged to submit work in mediums including but not limited to visual arts, performance, literary arts, music and sound, dance, and cross-disciplinary collaborations.

Open Studios Art Tour

October 18 - 19

The San Luis Obispo County Open Studios Art Tour, a program of SLO County Arts Council, takes place each year over two weekends in October, National Arts and Humanities Month. Free to the public, fine artists and crafters open their studios to showcase their art and share their processes. Visitors create their own self-guided tours using the catalog of participating artists.

Visiting studios during the tour gives you the chance to interact with artists on an intimate level and go deeper into their process, all while traveling around the landscapes and communities that inspire their work!

The 2025 tour takes place from 10am to 5pm.
