Other Opportunities

Superfest Disability Film Festival

Dates: October 17-20, 2024
Time: 24/7 Access | 4 days to watch films once you unlock your pass
Website

For more than 30 years, Superfest has celebrated cutting-edge cinema that portrays disability through a diverse, complex, unabashed and engaging lens. Since it first debuted in a small Los Angeles showcase in 1970 it has become an eagerly anticipated international event.

In 2013, the Paul K. Longmore Institute on Disability at San Francisco State (Longmore) started producing Superfest with LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired. In 2019, after a fruitful partnership, LightHouse moved on from the festival.

Now, in 2024, we are excited to announce that the Longmore Institute is welcoming a new Superfest partner, the San Francisco Disability Cultural Center (DCC). The Longmore Institute and the DCC share a common mission of creating joyful and generative spaces for disability culture and creativity to thrive.

We have grown from a single-day film festival to a robust year-around program that provides community showcases, a virtual and in-person festival that reaches thousands, and groundbreaking panel discussions. Though we’ve expanded and evolved, our core value has stayed true - we will always be rooted in community and prioritize access for disabled filmgoers of all kinds.

GEMS will take place April 5th and 6th 2025. The Gender Equity Center has overseen GEMS yearly since 2015 as an entirely original student-led and performed production which evolves every year. GEMS represents activism through theater and art. It seeks to represent the stories of those who have experienced life as womxn, socialization as womxn, and/or any aspects of womxnhood — in mind, body, and/or spirit, be it in past, present, future, and/or fluid — whether from womxn-identified, femme, transgender/nonbinary/gender non-conforming, and/or other marginally gendered individuals.

MFA in Art from the University of California, Santa Barbara

Applications due January 6, 2025 to be considered for Fall 2025 admission

The Department of Art two-year MFA program provides graduate students with the opportunity to explore studio production, field studies, and theoretical work in a flexible structure that encourages individual development within a multi and interdisciplinary context. The department equally stresses the importance of making along with an understanding of the conditions in which art is produced. Students are exposed to methodologies of inquiry that foster innovation and the problem-solving skills necessary for artistic development and creative production.

Students are given the opportunity to work one-on-one with our accomplished faculty who are actively engaged in a range of disciplines and areas that include art and cultural theory, video, digital media, print media, photography, performative studies, painting, spatial and public arts, and related fields in the Humanities, Sciences and Engineering including film, art history, and media arts & technology. The program provides graduate students with an intensive curriculum which includes seminars in studio, critique, theory, post-graduate concerns, a range of directed media research courses, and the department’s visiting artist lecture colloquium. Student's final thesis work culminates in a written thesis document and an exhibition at the university's Art, Design & Architecture Museum.

Our unique program offers direct exposure to visiting artists and scholars as well as post-grad positions on a competitive basis that may include teaching, a studio, and access to department facilities. The department wishes to attract motivated students who will benefit from interaction with a diverse and challenging faculty and peers. The environment offers focused research in a compelling natural setting while gaining exposure to the opportunities presented in nearby Los Angeles. Admitted students receive tuition, fee remission, and additional financial support through campus and departmental fellowships, stipends, and/or teaching assistantships, with additional funding opportunities available.

ONGAWA - Looking for Artists

We are a group of Cal Poly students from various majors, including computer science, business, graphic design, and more, working together to create ONGAWA. ONGAWA is an innovative rhythm role-playing game that combines immersive gameplay with musical storytelling. The game allows players to experience and interact with music in unique ways.

Game Prototype: https://gelzonexunsas.itch.io/virtuosos

Gameplay Video: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1QAo3BiUKEayuJC9TUkrl-nrLBZKLLmd8/view?usp=sharing

Game LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/showcase/ongawa/?viewAsMember=true

One of the unique aspects of ONGAWA is our collaboration with indie musicians. These musicians gain more exposure and make revenue from players interacting with their game levels. Since musicians have different genres of music and want game environments that best fit their music, we are looking to work with various art students with different art styles. This diversity in art will help musicians convey different themes and stories.

In terms of art, we are looking for contributions in the following areas:

  • 2D illustration
  • 2D Rigging
  • UI/UX

We believe this collaboration offers a fantastic opportunity for Cal Poly students to gain valuable game art experience in a professional working environment while also earning school course credits. We are eager to collaborate with students and faculty to make this vision a reality.
