Student Advising

Advising Appointments will continue taking place through fall quarter for all BFA students. Appointments with Major Advisor, Sara Frantz, can be made via Bookings.

Additionally, our Dept. Chair’s office hours are Mondays: 11am -12pm and Thursdays: 12 -1pm. Make an office hours appointment with Sara via Bookings. Drop-In appointments are also welcome. Email artdesign@calpoly.edu if you have any questions.

Department News

Art & Design students at Off Register Santa Barbara, Oct 18th

Cal Poly RI-SLO Studio and Zine Library will be tabling for the first time at Off Register: Santa Barbara Art Book and Print Fair on Saturday, October 18th! Students will be selling original zines and prints at this annual festival celebrating the art of all things print. Join us to support independent publishing and your favorite student artists and designers! Off Register takes place at Community Arts Workshop at 631 Garden Street in Santa Barbara and is entirely FREE to attend.

Join the Design Lab Board

Design Lab is our professional graphic design club on campus. It is a great way to get involved, meet other designers and learn from others outside of your cohort. Being a part of our board gives you the amazing opportunity to be even more involved! As a team we put on events like speakers, studio tours and so much more! Check out the link to our application.


 

Sticker Competition!

Cal Poly Art & Design students are invited to submit their original sticker designs as part of our sticker campaign! Selected works will be featured on stickers distributed throughout the department and beyond.  Winning designs must reference the overall awesomeness of the department or an individual concentration. You have one month (October 24th) to be fully considered for the first printing.

Photographer for Mustang News

Mustang News photographer’s work is seen by over 1,000,000 people every year across our platforms. Photographers get to be on the front lines for some of Cal Poly and San Luis Obispo’s largest events, while taking more intimate portraits and chasing breaking news.

We are looking for a photographer that will shoot a variety of events: breaking news, local events and arts and student life.

What You Will Do:

  • Shoot photos using top-notch composition skills on DSLR cameras
  • Use industry standard software, including Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom, to edit photos
  • Work with multimedia journalists to write compelling captions for images using AP style/Mustang News style
  • Collaborate with editors and other multimedia journalists on comprehensive coverage
  • Produce photo stories
  • Attend weekly Sunday editorial staff meetings

We are looking for team players with a drive to learn and passion for storytelling. Mustang Media Group members thrive on innovation while ambitiously seeking to hone their craft and improve their communities.

New Mustang Makerspace Information

Welcome back, Cal Poly students! As we start the new 2025-2026 year, the Cal Poly Machine Shops, under the College of Engineering, would like to invite you to our new Mustang Makerspace! Located in Bonderson (Building 197) next to Mustang ‘60, the Makerspace is the new space for all things digital fabrication. We have 56 3D printers, including Bambu, Prusa, Elegoo, Formlabs, and MarkForged systems, 4 laser cutters, an embroidery machine, a new industrial Cricut vinyl cutter, and sewing machines. This space is a completely free resource for class projects, senior projects, or personal projects! It is open to ALL students, regardless of major or engineering experience. Our shop techs will teach you everything you need to know to get started, and they are happy to answer any questions or provide any assistance to your project!

For Fall Quarter Weeks 2-10, the Makerspace will be open Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m., and Saturday, 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Any of the 3D printers within the space can be accessed without any safety training in our shops, but to use the lasers, you will need to get a Red Tag Certification. If you are interested in getting a Red Tag Certification or receiving any other trainings, please go to our website (https://machineshops.calpoly.edu/) for more information. Art After Dark

Art After Dark is a free, self-guided art walk taking place from 5pm to 8pm on the First Friday of each month. This event celebrates local creativity with visual exhibitions, live music, and community gatherings in SLO County galleries, businesses, and organizations. We encourage residents and visitors alike to explore the uniqueness of arts and culture here in SLO County.

Light refreshments and wine⁠⁠ ⁠ "Leaded Hands" brings together several years of Ortega's work that explores the queer spiritual experience through collage and painting. The dream-like pieces feature figures that drift between beauty and danger, grappling with the weight of expectation and the possibility of transformation. Through their work, Ortega invites viewers to consider what it means to create safety, embrace uncertainty, and keep the queer spirit alive.⁠

This year’s Dating Violence Action Month (DVAM) theme is: “Answer the Call: Connect. Empower. Transform.” This theme highlights our collective responsibility to end the silence surrounding dating violence and emphasizes that every voice makes a difference and every connection makes change.

ASI Craft Center Workshops

Registration is now open for fall quarter six-week courses, one-day workshops and quarter-long studio passes at the Craft Center. Craft stunning jewelry, shape a ceramics masterpiece, customize a surfboard, learn the fundamentals of leather crafting and more! We provide the classes, tools and space to bring your passion projects to life.

Announcements are sent to members of the Art and Design Department each week while classes are in session. To submit an event or news item, please email information to Paula Rygg (prygg@calpoly.edu), by Friday at 8:00 am. Include title, date and time, participation information (Zoom link, registration, ticketing, fee, etc.), and a brief description. Small – email sized images may be included. Weekly announcements are approved by the chair before they are distributed.
