Upcoming Events

In the Garage, I Feel Safe. No One Cares About My Ways | James Edmondson

Show runs from January 31st - February 28th

The Cal Poly University Art Gallery is proud to present the work of James Edmondson in his show, "In the Garage, I Feel Safe. No One Cares About My Ways,” from Friday, January 31 through February 28, 2025.

James Edmondson is a type designer based in Oakland, California. In 2015, he started OH no Type Co., an independent font foundry that creates bespoke and retail typefaces. With a background in lettering, and a deep appreciation for lively typefaces that are uniquely beautiful, and fun to read, Edmondson’s goal has always been to create quality work that highlights underappreciated genres. He respects history without reinventing the wheel—organic over geometric, lively over perfect, and good spacing above all else.

ART 383 - Digital Video I

Instructor: Lana Z Caplan
Time: M | W 11am - 3pm

Let’s make movies!!

Have you been making videos with your friends and want to take them to the next level or always wanted to learn more about how to make videos? Come join us this spring!

We will learn how to make your cinematography and editing look amazing, starting with the basics of how to use video and lighting gear, how to compose shots for cinema, the building blocks of narrative, scriptwriting, motion graphics, and how to shoot a documentary. We will also use advanced camera and lighting gear such as gimbles, jibs and follow focus system.

Working individually and in groups, we will make 3 video projects – one short poetic experimental video, one documentary interview short, and one short independent narrative film.

Whether you want to make better videos for marketing your brand, to work in the movie industry as a cinematographer, editor or director, to become a more marketable photographer or journalist, incorporate video into your studio practice, or up your social media feeds, you will leave this class with the skills to succeed!

Prerequisites – ART122 or ART224 (possibly waived with portfolio)
Questions or permission codes for waiver – lcaplan@calpoly.edu

ART 470/471: Experimental Prints

Instructor: Makia Sharp
Time: T | TH  8 - 11am

In Experimental Prints we will explore traditional and non-traditional photographic media, scale, and spatial relationships through digital large format printing. During the first half to the quarter, emphasis will be made on streamlining digital workflows through advanced Camera Raw and Photoshop editing to create exhibition quality prints on the 60” large format inkjet printer. Students will learn both technical and creative applications of tools such as curves color grading, masking, sharpening to shape and construct their digital images. Then we will focus on breaking conventions and traditional formats to create experimental digital prints that include installation, mixed media, sculpture, and other interdisciplinary practices.

ART485 – Video Art and Expanded Cinema

Instructor: Lana Z Caplan
Time: M | W  8 - 11am

Open to Art & Design majors/minors and all others as an elective – no prerequisite

In ART485 we will explore video art and expanded cinema* in all its forms! We will learn about the historic and contemporary makers of the medium while making our own projects. We will start with learning about the beginning of video art in the 60’s and go up to present day VR (Virtual Reality), AR (Augmented Reality), AI and more.

Students will make 2 video art or installation pieces, as well as several in class exercises in editing and projection.

This is a fun class that requires no prior knowledge or video skills. Video Art is often not about the technical aspects or making something that looks slick and produced by Hollywood. Video art is often raw and rough, made experimenting with whatever tools artists have on hand. But, if you have lots of experience, you can bring that too.

Some artists to consider

  • Pipilotti Rist
  • Doug Aiken
  • Isaac Julien
  • Fiona Tan
  • Christian Marclay
  • Joan Jonas
  • Olafur Eliasson
  • Ragnar Kjartansson
  • Gibson& Recoder

*Expanded cinema is a term used to describe a film, video, multi-media performance or an immersive environment that pushes the boundaries of cinema and rejects the traditional one-way relationship between the audience and the screen.
