Elizabeth Folk Featured on The Conversation Art Podcast

Folk also touches on performance art, being able to access it virtually through Instagram Live, as well as performing a little piece live on the Conversation Art Podcast with Michael Shaw.

The Art and Design Department and the University Art Gallery are pleased to welcome back twelve of our alumni from a range of graduating classes for an exhibition in the University Art Gallery. The concentrations of graphic design, studio art and photo/video are all represented in the first Alumni Show to be presented by the University Art Gallery in 10 years.
The 2020 Alumni Show is on view February 20 - March 17, 2020.

In “Un/Raveling: A Collective Mourning” at the Harold J. Miossi Art Gallery January 30 – February 27, 2020, artists address how their contemporary practices wrestle with grief and mourning—both personal and collective. Through their distinct practices, this diverse group of artists weaves a collective response to these narratives of loss. They ravel and unravel their own experiences with each others’ - culminating in an exhibition where anyone can find a place to enter, sit, and not feel alone.
Lana Z Caplan's Video AUTOPOIESIS Screening Internationally

Lana Z Caplan’s newest video, Autopoiesis, premiered in March 2019 at a solo screening at Anachivia, in the famous Estudios Churubusco in Mexico City.
Since then, Autopoiesis has been screening in festivals and screening programs around the world including AXW Film Festival at Anthology Film Archives, (New York, NY), Other Cinema (San Francisco, CA), Portland Underground Film Festival (Portland, OR), Antimatter [media art] (Victoria, BC, Canada), Transient Visions Festival of the Moving Image (Johnson City, NY), ECHOFLUXX 19 Festival (Prague, CZ), 33rd Stuttgarter Filmwinter Festival for Expanded Media (Stuttgart, Germany) and VASTLAB Experimental Film Festival (Los Angeles, CA).

The Art and Design Department and Cal Poly University Art Gallery are pleased to welcome curator Aline Smithson and seven of the eleven national artists featured in Beyond the Surface: The Photograph as Object for a presentation in the gallery this Thursday January 9 at 4pm.
Artists are traveling from NYC, Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego to be with us for this event.
Photography/Video Student Wins First Place at CSU Media Arts Festival Awards

Art and Design Photo/Video concentration student Casey Wieber won first place for his video “Danny Derrick: The Private Studio Experience,” in the Promotional Video category at the CSU Media Arts Festival. Wieber produced and directed the video, which is a portrait of a San Luis Obispo tattoo artist, as his final project for ISLA 340. Packaging and Graphic Design Students Win Gold at National Competition

With their focus on highlighting the joy and interactivity of unboxing a product, three interdisciplinary Cal Poly teams received first place, honorable mention, and shout-out awards at the Paperboard Packaging Alliance (PPA) 2019 Student Design Challenge.
Thomas DePasquale's Translations Published in Paradigms of Renaissance Grotesques

Thomas DePasquale's translations of a series of letters on painting written by the sixteenth-century Italian scientist Ulisse Aldrovandi were published in Paradigms of Renaissance Grotesques.
Last fall, in conjunction with The Renaissance Nude, a recent exhibition at the J.P. Getty Museum in Los Angeles, DePasquale’s 2018 essay, “Michelangelo’s Last Judgment and the Reception of the Nude in Counter-Reformation Italy” was published in a volume of studies. DePasquale also helped organize the Getty exhibition.
