This week’s Questions with an Educator features Sky Bergman.

Sky is a commercial photographer as well as a Professor of Photography at Cal Poly State University in San Luis Obispo, CA. Her fine art work is included in permanent collections at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Brooklyn Museum, Seattle Art Museum, Santa Barbara Museum of Art, and the Bibliothèque Nationale de France. Her commercial work has appeared on book covers for Random House and Farrar, Straus & Girouz Inc., and magazine spreads in Smithsonian, Arthur Frommer’s Budget Travel, Reader’s Digest, and Archaeology Odyssey. Here, Sky shares a bit about her experience as a photography educator, and the advice she commonly shares with her students. Sky’s Film “Lives Well Lived” is currently in theatrical release across the country, so take a look at the film’s description at the end of this article.

Packaging and Design Students Stand Out Among the World’s Best at Global Competition

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Teams of Cal Poly packaging, business, and design students received two of the top three awards at the 2017 World Packaging Organisation (WPO) WorldStar International Packaging Design Student Competition that featured innovative package designs from university students from more than two dozen nations.

In addition, two other Cal Poly teams received WorldStar Student Certificates of Merit given to the next 10 highest scoring entries.

The Cal Poly students were honored for designing creative, functional and eye-catching packaging systems for food, healthcare and sports products. The interdisciplinary teams combined industrial technology and packaging students with art and design students to develop a physical prototype of their product complete with branded graphics.

Sky Bergman, professor in Art & Design, and Debra Valencia-Laver, associate dean in the College of Liberal Arts, will engage in a lively exchange about Sky Bergman’s experience producing and directing the film. The conversation will take place from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Friday, January 19, 2018 at the ATL Keck Lab (No. 7). There will be time for audience questions and light refreshments will be served. The event is free and open to the public.

At the end of the 2016-17 academic year, Habib Placencia Adissi (Art and Design, '17), who concentrated in graphic design, won Cal Poly’s University Senior Recognition Award for Contribution to the Objectives and Public Image of the University; and Kate Meissner (Art and Design, '17), who concentrated in studio art, won the Cal Poly Arts Award for Excellence in Original Work. 

Student's Photo Featured in Glamour Magazine's "50 States of Women"

Haley VanBaale, a junior in the photography and video concentration, had one of her photographs chosen to be published in the September 2017 issue of Glamour magazine. The article is titled “50 States of Women,” and VanBaale’s photograph of her roommate Emily Barbero was selected to represent California in the series. VanBaale is also a color guard member of the Mustang Marching Band and recently started working for Associated Students, Inc. as a photographer.
